Some herbalists have said that if we truly knew the value of Nettles that we would grow nothing else. Nettles contain contain all the vitamins and minerals known to be needed for human health and growth, supporting every tissue and system in the body. Nettles are often paired with Oatstraw, a gentle but deep nervous system tonic, helpful for restoring nervous system integrity and resilience. In addition to deep nutritional support, both are strongly indicated for bone health chronic stress, pain, and tension.

With back-to-school and the dreaded time change behind us, now is a great time to think about easy ways to enhance your health and add resiliency going into the holidays.  I have been working to develop some simple kits to add these plants to your self-care regime, or help you start a new one.  Watch below to see how easy nourishing herbal infusions are to make!

Herbal Infusion Instructions:

Common sense safety:  Use boiling water safely.  Place jar in sink before adding boiling water.  (Jars are heat safe but can weaken over time, replace jar after excessive use or if any signs of cracks or dings).  Care for glass jars and dry steel lids completely to prevent rust.  Consult your Dr or pharmacist for potential (rare) pharmaceutical interactions or during pregnancy.  As with anything, discontinue use if allergy or irritation occurs. Opened and/or used supplies are not refundable.

I like to drink nettle daily for at least a week then oatstraw daily for at least a week to develop a sense of how each plant makes me feel.  Over time, you may develop a sense of which one you need, and when you need it. You can also experiment with a half cup of each in your daily infusion.

Oatstraw

Add 1 cup oatstraw to quart mason jar.  Place jar in sink before adding boiling water.  Make sure plant material is totally covered and put regular ball jar lid on top side down just to stop steam from escaping, or seal side down which will need to be popped with a butter knife to open in the AM.  Let sit at least 4 hours or overnight.

Replace metal lid with stainless screen and screw on the collar.  Pour directly into mug or drinking glass, or into an additional jar and reseal with original lid.  Drink contents within 24 hours or refrigerate up to 48. Place used herb in compost.

Can be consumed hot, cold or at room temp.

***An even more nutrient dense formula can be made by gently “decocting” instead of infusing.  Cook 45 minutes on a very low boil and then strain through fine mesh strainer.

Safe for daily use.  Not recommended for people with celiac disease.  Individuals with Celiac gluten allergies can sometimes be sensitive to avenin in oats.  Most people with a simple gluten-free-diet are fine.  Can increase milk supply in breast feeding so be aware of oversupply issues.

Nettle Leaf

Add 1 cup nettle leaf to quart mason jar.

I actually love nettle warm with a dash of sea salt.

Safe for daily use. Check with Dr or pharmacist if you are on blood thinning drugs.  Nettle can contain high amounts of vitamin K which can be contraindicated with some medications.  Can increase milk supply in breast feeding so be aware of oversupply issues.
